Montecristo : Edmond Dantes's soul seems to be still floating on the island, between reality and imagination. It's a wild, uninhabited island, where the Mediterranean shrubs are everywhere, mainly heather and mastic: it is an important place for migratory birds. It looks like a uninhabited granitic cone where only the guardian and two ''guardie forestali'' (forest rangers) still live. Montecristo island is one of the most inaccessible and wild islands of the whole Tuscan archipelago, and it also is the furthest from the main Tuscan coast.
It can be visited pior to authorization from the ''Guardie Forestali'', as it has been a natural reserve since 1971.
